The Washington State cannabis industry recently reached its first $60 million month this July. At Canna Ventures, we believe insights-driven branding, strategy, and marketing are all essential to our process for building strong and lasting cannabis brands.

With that in mind, this month we compiled some cannabis market data points concerning the state’s top selling producers, processors, retailers, product categories, product types, brands and more, from some of the most trusted resources in the industry.

As you can see, there are a few really good resources online for finding up-to-date cannabis market data. Here’s a bit more about three of our favorites:

3 Cannabis Market Data Online Resources

502data.com – this site pulls its data directly from the Washington State Liquor Control Board website, and displays it in a much more user-friendly way, making it easier to quickly find information regarding Washington State’s producers, processors, and retailers over the past 3 years.

MJTicker.com – this free version of FrontRunner Data gives you a snapshot look at some of the same data as 502data.com, as well as different trends across the state (comparing the East side of the state to West) including the number of retail customers, the wholesale retail prices across the state, top strains, and more. Information regarding top brands and products are said to be coming soon.

Headset.IO – Want to know which brands, product categories and product types are selling the best right now? Headset.IO has a wide range of Insights Reports that give their readers access to information regarding top selling brands and products, as well as some consumer demographics in Washington State.

Cannabis Brand Psychographic Segmentation Study: Wave 2

As some of you may know, in 2014 Canna Ventures launched the first round of the first-of-its-kind national psychographic segmentation study on recreational cannabis brands in the United States. While the above resources are perfect for finding sales and demographics data, we instead want to know what people want from recreational cannabis brands today, and so we set out to answer the following questions:

  • What types of people will most strongly patronize cannabis brands?
  • What are their attitudes, behaviors, lifestyles, as well as their demographic characteristics?
  • What are they looking for in the “ideal” cannabis brand?
  • What worldviews and outlooks do they ideally want to see expressed in a cannabis brand?
  • How can emerging cannabis brands use results like these to more effectively sell to subgroups of the most receptive consumers?

The results were compelling and we’ve  just recently concluded collecting responses to the 2nd wave of the study. This most recent round of consumer psychographic research will provide more of an emphasis on:

  • Medical marijuana
  • The distinction between what consumers seek in a medical marijuana brand and a recreational marijuana brand.
  • Product propensities
